Where to Find Help: Andrologists, Andrology, Men's Doctors, Men's Clinics & Men's Surgery

In Short

Men dealing with questions about sexual health, fertility, hormones or surgical procedures often face the same question: who is the right person to talk to? The boundaries between urology, andrology, general medicine and specialized centres are fluid. This entry provides an overview of the relevant specialties and institutions — making it easier to take that first step toward seeking professional help.

Andrology – The Medical Specialty

Andrology is the medical specialty concerned with male reproductive medicine and sexual health. It is, in a sense, the male counterpart to gynaecology — although in Germany it is not (yet) an independent primary specialty in its own right, but rather an additional qualification built on top of a completed specialist training — most commonly urology, less often dermatology or endocrinology.

In terms of subject matter, andrology covers the diagnosis and treatment of male fertility disorders, hormonal conditions such as hypogonadism and testosterone deficiency, erectile dysfunction and other sexual dysfunctions, diseases of the testicles and epididymis, as well as questions relating to male contraception, such as vasectomy. Andrology works closely with urology, endocrinology, reproductive medicine and — in the area of psychosexual disorders — with sexual medicine.

The Andrologist

An andrologist is a specialist physician with an additional qualification in andrology, usually a urologist with in-depth expertise in male reproductive and sexual medicine. They are the specialist point of contact for questions relating to family planning, semen analysis and fertility treatment, testosterone deficiency and hormone therapy, erection problems or loss of libido, as well as anatomical changes to the testicles and penis. Andrology consultations are offered at university hospitals, specialized practices and a number of men's health centres.

Men's Health Doctors and Counselling

The term "men's doctor" is not an official specialist title, but in practice usually describes a urologist or andrologist who focuses on men's health issues. It stands for an accessible, male-focused approach to medical care — in an environment that allows for discretion and direct, straightforward communication.

Men's health counselling goes beyond the purely medical framework: it also encompasses psychological, psychosocial and preventive aspects. Typical topics include erectile dysfunction, fertility questions, hormone status, psychological strain such as stress, burnout or depression, as well as questions about lifestyle, relationships or fatherhood. Men's counselling services can be found at medical practices, counselling centres, clinics and, increasingly, online.

Many men hesitate to seek professional help for health concerns — particularly with sensitive issues such as erection problems, infertility or psychological strain. Yet an early conversation with the right point of contact is often the decisive step that shortens unnecessary suffering and improves treatment outcomes.

Men's Clinics

Men's clinics are specialized medical institutions that bring several disciplines together under one roof, enabling holistic care tailored to men's specific health needs. Typically, urologists, andrologists, endocrinologists, psychosomatic specialists and psychotherapists work together there in an interdisciplinary approach. Treatment focuses include erectile dysfunction, testosterone deficiency, infertility, prostate conditions, psychological strain, as well as preventive health care and lifestyle optimization. Many men's clinics offer both outpatient and inpatient or partial inpatient programmes. The approach is often explicitly attuned to male sensitivities — recognizing that men tend to raise health concerns later and bring specific communication expectations with them.

Men's Surgery

Men's surgery refers to surgical procedures aimed at improving or harmonizing the male body — for aesthetic, functional or psychological reasons. It covers a broad spectrum: in the face and hair area, procedures such as eyelid lifts, rhinoplasty or hair transplantation; on the upper body, the surgical treatment of gynaecomastia through gland removal and liposuction; in body contouring, liposuction and body sculpting; and in intimate surgery, all surgical measures on the penis, scrotum and adjacent structures.

Men bring along specific anatomical characteristics — thicker skin, higher muscle density, different fat distribution patterns — that require corresponding experience and adaptation of surgical techniques. The aesthetic goal is generally a natural-looking, masculine result with as little downtime as possible. Discretion and open, matter-of-fact communication on equal footing are just as important as surgical competence.

Our Practice as a Point of Contact

UGRS Center Darmstadt is a specialized practice for urogenital surgery in men. Our treatment focus is on surgical procedures in the intimate area — penis enlargement, penis lengthening and girth enhancement, penile implants, as well as the surgical treatment of Peyronie's disease (Induratio Penis Plastica).

We see ourselves as a specialized point of contact for men who, after an initial workup by a urologist or GP, are pursuing a surgical solution, as well as for second opinions on procedures already planned elsewhere. Initial contact is always possible discreetly and without complication.
